Dry skin is a very common problem. Though in most of the cases it is not at all a serious medical condition, yet it is very uncomfortable. This condition is marked by scaling, itching and cracking.

Dry skin occurs for various reasons. Some people might have dry skin naturally. But even if you have an oily skin, you may develop dry skin from time to time. This may happen due to harsh weather conditions, using soaps having strong chemicals or due to taking too many hot showers.

Having dry facial skin is very distressing as it makes you look dull and completely nullifies all your effort to look smart and beautiful.

So the first and foremost thing is to take care of your skin, to keep your complexion hydrated and radiant. In order to achieve this, there are many do’s and don’ts mentioned below, which you have to follow religiously.

  1. Cleansing the Face

Wash your face with simple water. Please remember to use only lukewarm water. Hot water is your foe, if you have dry skin. It will rob your skin of all the essential oils and make it even drier. Also try to avoid cleansers as most of them contain harsh chemicals like alcohol and sulfates. But if you want to go for something special, then go for micellar water.

It is one of the best cleansers as it removes dirt and makeup very efficiently without harming your skin. Just pour some micellar water on a cotton pad and lightly wipe your face.

At night, you can use an oil blend for cleansing your skin. This method removes dirt, sweat and makeup without drying your skin. It may sound a bit odd that oil is being recommended to clean the skin. But yes, the fact is that oils work wonderfully as gentle cleansers. Make a blend of Argan oil, almond oil and olive oil and mix it at night. You will see the difference that it makes.

  1. Exfoliating the Skin

If you have dry skin, dead skin cells quickly build up on the surface of your skin making it dull. Exfoliating your skin will help remove this layer of dead cells, revealing a fresh healthy skin. Depending upon how dry your skin is, you can exfoliate your skin a few times a week. You can use a face scrub for exfoliating or you can make your own scrub at home by mixing a teaspoon of powdered oat meal and a tablespoon of honey. Simply rub it over your skin and then rinse it off with cold or lukewarm water.

  1. Moisturizing

Moisturize your face every morning and night. Try to do it immediately after cleansing, when the skin is still damp. It will hydrate your skin very effectively. Along with your face, moisturize your neck also.

Try to use a moisturizer which contains natural ingredients like oil blends and lanolin. Never use a moisturizer containing alcohol as it will further dry your skin.

For a double dose of moisture, you can first rub some facial oil on your face and then apply a moisturizer.

Once in seven or ten days, you can do a deep moisturizing treatment. Mix 1 teaspoonful of olive oil or coconut oil, 1 teaspoonful of honey and 1 smashed banana or ½ smashed Avocado. Apply this mixture over your face. Keep it for about half an hour and then rinse it off with cold or lukewarm water. Your skin will feel rejuvenated.

  1. Taking Sun Protection Measures

This is applicable for everyone. If you have dry skin, you should take extra care to protect your skin from the harsh rays of the Sun. You should use a sunscreen lotion with SPF 30 or more.

After sun exposure, moisturize your skin immediately. Wear a hat for extra protection and limit your amount of time in the sun.

  1. Applying Appropriate Makeup

You should go for a makeup which is specially formulated for dry skin. Try to avoid any makeup product which contains alcohol. Use a makeup blender to apply makeup on your face. It will help you to get a smooth and even application. After you are done with applying makeup, use a setting spray to help you set your look.

Some Extra Measures

  1. Always carry a bottle of coconut oil when you go out. Apply a few drops on your dry patches from time to time, it will hydrate your skin and make it look healthy.
  2. Use a humidifier in your bedroom, it will keep your skin moist especially during the winter months when heating systems make the air inside the room extremely dry.
  3. Spraying a facial mist can keep your skin hydrated and fresh. Apply whenever you feel that your skin needs hydration.
  4. For dry lips you can apply a lip conditioner whenever necessary.
  5. Drinking a lot of water will help to keep your skin hydrated inside out.
  6. Take foods rich in vitamins and anti-oxidants.
  7. Avoid tobacco, alcohol and drugs as they have an adverse effect on your skin. They will dry your skin and make you look older.
